Song of the Star

By Bryant Burroughs

The One who is Light
made me to shine this night.
“Beam!” he declared, “It’s time.”
I sing as I shine,
calling to near and far: “Come!”

Come you from the East,
follow me to the One
worthy of being sought,
for he is the Way.
Come, walk this lighted way
and welcome with your gifts
the Treasure of Nations.

Come shepherds, night-watchers,
the fullness of time has come.
Come and see the marvel:
a virgin bearing a son,
a babe both God and man.
Look with awe
upon God with us.

Come, hierarchy of angels,
sing the Good News
that God has come near.
Unbidden, yet desired.
Unexpected, yet hoped for.
Look with wonder
upon the Wonder of God.

Come, Herod, even you, come.
Is your soul not worth a crown,
which is lost to rust or death?
Cast it down and bend your knees
to the One True King.

Come, all who dwell in darkness:
Bethlehem, City of David,
in you is born the Key of David
who fits the locks of souls.
Galilee beyond the Jordan,
darkness has scraped you tender.
He is coming, he is coming,
with healing in his wings.
